About Cynergy Bank

Cynergy Bank is a UK bank offering personal savings accounts alongside banking services for businesses and property-related customers. Its savings range includes easy access accounts, notice savings, fixed rate bonds and Cash ISAs, giving customers different options depending on how long they want to save and when they may need access to their money.

Cynergy Bank was established under its current name in 2018 following the acquisition and rebranding of Bank of Cyprus UK. The bank’s history in the UK therefore predates the Cynergy name, although its present identity reflects its development as an independently operated UK banking business.

Who owns Cynergy Bank?

Cynergy Bank is privately owned and operates through Cynergy Bank Limited. Its ownership is separate from Bank of Cyprus, following the sale of the former UK banking business in 2018. The bank is authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority and the Prudential Regulation Authority.

Unlike providers concentrating exclusively on personal savings, Cynergy Bank also serves business customers, including businesses with property and commercial banking requirements. Its personal savings products form one part of this wider banking operation.

Cynergy Bank's approach to personal savings

Cynergy Bank offers several ways to hold savings, from its Online Easy Access Account to notice accounts requiring 35, 95 or 120 days’ advance notice for withdrawals. This range allows customers to consider different access arrangements without necessarily committing their money to a fixed rate bond.

Its fixed rate bonds provide another option for customers willing to leave money deposited for a specified term. Cynergy Bank also offers Cash ISAs, including online and fixed rate products, for eligible savers who want their interest to remain free from UK Income Tax.

Individual products have their own opening requirements, interest payment arrangements and withdrawal conditions. Customers should check the terms of the particular account they are considering, as rates and product availability can change and different issues may have different conditions.

Opening and Managing Cynergy Bank Accounts

Cynergy Bank allows customers to apply for and manage many of its personal savings products online. The arrangements depend on the account selected, particularly whether it provides easy access, requires advance notice for withdrawals or holds money for a fixed term. Customers should check the eligibility, funding and access conditions for their chosen product before applying.

Opening a Cynergy Bank savings account

Applicants for Cynergy Bank’s online personal savings products generally need to be at least 18 years old and resident in the UK for tax purposes. Applications require personal and contact information, together with any identity checks requested by the bank. Individual products have their own minimum opening deposits and eligibility conditions.

Existing customers may be able to use Cynergy Bank’s Fast Track Apply service through Online Banking to open additional eligible savings accounts. Product availability can vary, and some account issues may be restricted to existing customers or replaced by newer issues.

Depositing money and funding accounts

Cynergy Bank savings accounts have different funding requirements. Its Online Easy Access Account and Online ISA have relatively low opening deposit requirements, while notice savings accounts and fixed rate products require larger initial deposits. Customers should check the minimum and maximum balances for the specific account before transferring money.

For Cynergy Bank’s current Fixed Rate Bonds, customers have a 14-day funding window when opening the account. Once this period ends and the fixed term is underway, further access to the deposited money is restricted. The bank’s Cash ISA products have separate subscription and transfer arrangements, including rules governing money added during the tax year.

Managing savings through online and mobile banking

Cynergy Bank’s Online Banking service allows customers to view balances, review transactions and statements, transfer eligible funds and send secure messages. Customers can also use Online Banking to submit notice withdrawal instructions where supported by their account.

Cynergy Bank also provides a mobile banking app for personal customers. Available functions include checking savings balances and, for eligible fixed rate bonds, reviewing maturity options. Some products and servicing requests may have additional requirements, so customers should refer to their account documentation.

Withdrawing money from easy access and notice accounts

Cynergy Bank’s Online Easy Access Account permits withdrawals without a fixed notice period, subject to the account’s normal transaction conditions. This differs from its Online Notice Saver, where customers select a 35-, 95- or 120-day notice period and must give the required advance notice before withdrawing funds.

Notice instructions can be submitted through the bank’s supported account management channels. Customers should allow for the full notice period when planning withdrawals, as these accounts are not designed to provide immediate access to savings.

Fixed rate bonds and maturity instructions

Cynergy Bank’s Fixed Rate Bonds generally do not permit withdrawals once the initial funding window has closed and the fixed term has begun. Customers should therefore consider whether they can leave their savings untouched until the agreed maturity date.

Cynergy Bank states that it contacts fixed rate bond customers approximately 14 days before maturity to explain their options. Customers can select or amend eligible renewal instructions through Online Banking or the mobile app. Loyalty interest rates may be available when qualifying bonds mature and are reinvested, although these rates can differ from those offered to new customers.

Managing Cash ISAs and transfers

Cynergy Bank offers an Online ISA alongside fixed rate Cash ISAs. Customers transferring existing Cash ISA savings should follow the bank’s formal ISA transfer process rather than withdrawing the money themselves, which could affect the tax-free status of the transferred funds.

Cynergy Bank’s fixed rate Cash ISA arrangements include an associated variable rate ISA. Early closure of a fixed rate ISA may be permitted subject to an interest penalty, while the Online ISA provides more flexible access. Customers should check the terms of their chosen ISA, including whether withdrawals can be replaced without using additional ISA allowance.

How Are Cynergy Bank Deposits Protected?

Eligible deposits held with Cynergy Bank are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS), the UK's deposit guarantee scheme. Protection applies across the bank's savings range, including easy access accounts, notice savers, fixed rate bonds and Cash ISAs. The amount protected depends on the customer's combined eligible deposits rather than the number of accounts they hold.

Is Cynergy Bank covered by the FSCS?

Cynergy Bank operates through Cynergy Bank plc, a UK-authorised bank regulated by the Prudential Regulation Authority and the Financial Conduct Authority. The bank confirms that eligible deposits held with it qualify for FSCS protection, subject to the scheme’s rules and compensation limits.

The standard FSCS deposit protection limit is £120,000 per eligible person, per authorised firm. This limit applies to the total eligible balance held with Cynergy Bank plc, including qualifying interest, rather than providing a separate allowance for every savings product.

How does protection work across Cynergy's savings accounts?

Cynergy Bank offers several types of savings account with different access conditions. A customer might hold money in an Online Easy Access Account, a 95 Day Notice Saver and a Fixed Rate Bond at the same time. Although these accounts operate differently, their eligible balances are combined when calculating FSCS protection.

For example, someone holding £30,000 in a Cynergy Online Easy Access Account, £40,000 in a Notice Saver and £45,000 in a Fixed Rate Bond would have combined deposits of £115,000. Assuming the accounts belong to one eligible person and there are no other relevant deposits, the full amount would fall within the standard £120,000 protection limit.

Are Cynergy Bank Cash ISAs protected separately?

No. A Cash ISA provides tax advantages for eligible savings interest, but it does not create an additional FSCS deposit protection allowance. Money held in a Cynergy Online ISA or Fixed Rate Cash ISA is combined with the customer’s other eligible deposits under the same Cynergy Bank plc authorisation.

This is particularly important for customers who hold several Cynergy accounts, including fixed rate products opened in different years. The combined eligible balance, including accrued interest where applicable, may increase over time and should be considered when assessing the protection available.

What about joint accounts and larger deposits?

For an eligible joint account, each account holder’s share is assessed separately under the FSCS rules. Two eligible people may therefore receive up to £240,000 of standard protection between them, provided their respective shares and any other eligible deposits with the same authorised bank remain within their individual limits.

Certain qualifying temporary high balances, such as money received following the sale of a main residence or an inheritance, may receive additional protection of up to £1.4 million for a limited period, generally six months. Eligibility depends on the circumstances and evidence required by the FSCS.

Does FSCS protection affect withdrawal restrictions?

FSCS protection does not change the normal conditions of a savings account. Cynergy’s notice savers still require the applicable withdrawal notice, while fixed rate bonds generally restrict access until maturity. The FSCS is designed to protect eligible deposits if an authorised bank fails, not to remove contractual withdrawal restrictions or protect against changes in interest rates.

Customers can review the bank’s own deposit protection information on the Cynergy Bank FSCS information page. Further guidance about compensation limits, joint accounts, shared banking authorisations and temporary high balances is available from the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.
